Shapeways: Photoshaper

15 March 2009 ,    No Comments

I mentioned awhile ago Shapeways, a company whose primary focus has been on 3D printing. They’ve recently (this week) announced a service named Photoshaper which creates light sculptures.

What is a light sculpture? It’s a plastic card/photo which is shaped using the contrast of a photo, and it looks weird until you hold it up to a light. What? That doesn’t describe it? There is a video available (below) which probably does a better job at explaining it.

Kinda Very cheesy music, but I thought it looked awesome. I know my father-in-law and brothers-in-law would be utterly fascinated by this. I think these could look very interesting as lampshades or possibly using LED’s for backlighting (low heat & power usage and size) so that hangable art could be created.

The only downside is the cost, each light sculpture will set you back USD$40-50 or AUD$60-76 (it does include shipping however). Ouch. When the AUD climbs again, I’ll probably get a few of these for presents.

Disclaimer: Yes, I was contacted to get early access and promote this (and I’ve been too sick to actually post), but no – not getting paid for this blog post, I just think 3D printing and some of the stuff they (Shapeways) are doing is pretty cool.
